Did you know that a great way to protect your financial assets at ACCU is to safeguard your physical mail?

Help Protect Yourself from Check Fraud by Safeguarding Your Mail

America’s Christian Credit Union is committed to helping you take steps to protect your financial assets. We are committed to helping you protect yourself against fraud. As times become more uncertain, and criminals become more and more creative with their tactics, we must remain vigilant against crime.

The Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN) cited that thieves most frequently alter the checks they steal from the mail instead of counterfeiting them or simply signing them to pass them off as their own to banks. FinCEN also revealed that from Feb. 27, 2023, to Aug. 30, 2023, 841 financial institutions of all types and sizes in the U.S. reported fraud involving “mail theft-related check fraud,” which flagged more than $688 million in actual or attempted check fraud transactions altogether.” These statistics come directly from FinCEN and are being provided strictly for informational purposes. America’s Christian Credit Union is not responsible for any misrepresentation or inaccuracy resulting from FinCEN’s data.

America’s Christian Credit Union would like to provide a few safeguards you can take to protect yourself from mail theft-related check fraud.

  1. Drop off mail containing checks inside the post office. Criminals can break into your mailbox, and stand-alone U.S.P.S. mailboxes to steal physical mail containing your checks.
  2. Take advantage of America’s Christian Credit Union’s online banking services. One of the more effective ways to protect yourself against check fraud is to limit the number of checks you write. Our online banking service allows you to transfer funds, make bill payments, and more.
  3. You may also want to explore options for tithing that do not involve writing checks.

Please note that while these recommendations can help reduce the risk of check fraud, no measures can guarantee complete protection. It is important to remain vigilant and take additional steps to safeguard your account as needed.
